Having already rewritten the British national records for 60m Hurdles and 100m Hurdles laster year, Tiffany Porter ran 6.83sec to finish second in the 50m Hurdles today, erasing Yvette Wray-Luker's 21 year-old record of 7.03. Former ASU star Ryan Whiting won the Men's Shot Put with a toss of 21.16m, taking first over former IAAF World Champions Christian Cantwell and Adam Nelson. In the 800m, Ethiopian national record holder Fantu Magiso won the Women's 800m, sprinting to victory on the last lap, winning 2:07.54 to New Jersey high schooler Ajee Wilson's 2:09.09. |

Proving that his course record victory at last year's Honda Los Angeles Marathon was no fluke, Markos Geneti took 1min41sec off of his lifetime best to take third at the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon today, finishing third to complete an Ethiopian 1-2-3 finish. Throughout the race, Geneti stayed at or near the front, following pacemakers in a large group through halfway in 1:02:22, before the fast pace left only Geneti, eventual winner Ayele Abshero, Dino Sefr and fourth-placer Jonathan Maiyo in contention. |

On opposite sides of the world, Raji Assefa and Debebe Tolossa both took large chunks of their lifetime marathon bests with runner up finishes at the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon and the Chevron Houston Marathon, respectively. In warm and humid Mumbai, Assefa spent the majority of the race tucked intot eh back of the lead pack, which passed halfway in 1:05:02. The pack dwindled to seven contenders in the final 10km, which led to a sprint finish in the final 200m, with Kenyan Laban Moiben edging out Assefa for the win, both of them clocked in 2:10:48, more than a minute faster than the previous lifetime best Assefa recorded last fall in Beijing. In Houston, the pack was reduced to Tolossa and two of his compatriots by 30km, as the leaders had been pushing well inside course record pace since the early stages. Tolossa took second behind Tariku Jufar in 2:07:41, more than two minutes quicker than his previous lifetime best. |

In her first race in over a year, Tirunesh Dibaba came away with a sprint victory over compatriot Gelete Burka at the San Silvestre Vallecana 10km in Madrid. Dibaba, who missed the entire 2011 track season with injuries, outkicked the 1500m specialist to win the first international 10km road race of her career in 31:30. Young talent Hagos Gebrhiwet, fifth in last summer's IAAF World Youth Championships 3000m final, suprised defending champion Teklemariam Medhin of Eritrea with a sprint finsih, with both runners being timed in 27:59. Jessica Beard beat out Kimberly Duncan of LSU and Tina Sutej of Arkansas to win the Bowerman Award, the annual award for the most valuable NCAA track and field athlete of the year. Beard, who won a gold medal as a member of the USA's 4x400m Relay team at the IAAF World Championships this past summer in Daegu, South Korea, won indoor and outdoor NCAA 400m titles for the Texas A&M Aggies this year, leading the Aggie Women to their third consecutive NCAA Outdoor Team Championship.
