Gebremariam, G. Dibaba win gold at World Cross

AMMAN, Jordan - In one of the most exciting races in the history of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, Gebre-egziabher Gebremariam kicked past 2007 World Champion Zersenay Tadese and Uganda's Moses Kipsiro to take gold in the Men's 12km. Gebremariam's win led Ethiopia to the silver medal behind rival Kenya in the team competition. With his individual gold (the first of his career as a senior) and his team silver, Gebremariam now has 15 World Cross Country Championship medals, second only to teammate Kenenisa Bekele, who whas absent from these championships with injury. Less than two hours earlier, Genzebe Dibaba, the 2008 World Junior Cross Country champion, successfully defended her title, holding off Kenyan challenger Mercy Cherono. Dibaba, sister of Tirunesh and Ejegayehu Dibaba, built up leads of as much as 20m at various points in the 6km race only to have the gap closed by Cherono. Only in the final 300m climb of the race did Dibaba successfully shake off Cherono for good. Read more...
