Defar breaks second world record in eight days
PRAGUE, Czech Republic - Just eight days after setting a new 5000m indoor world record in Stockholm, Meseret Defar has broken her own world best for 2 Miles at the International Indoor Meeting in Prague. Defar, the reigning world champion and 2004 Olympic gold medalist at 5000m, set the previous world best for 2 Miles, 9:10.50, at the 2008 Reebok Boston Indoor Games.
With unofficial splits of 2:51.13 and 5:45.77 for the first two kilometers, Defar seemed well on pace to break her own world record. With little more than one lap to go, Defar passed 3000m in 8:33.64, a time that by itself world be the fourth fastest in the world this year. Winning by over twenty-five seconds ahead of Tanzanian Zakia Mrisho, Defar's mark in Prague is the eighth world record of her already storied career.
