Defar breaks world record in Stockholm

STOCKHOLM, SWE - Meseret Defar, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist at 5000m, has broken the women's world record for 5000m indoors. Defar, competing in her second competition of the 2009 season, was ran 14:24.37, to shave just over three seconds off the record that compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba had set in 2007.

Running at the GE Galan in Stockholm, Defar was clocked at 8:42.39 at 3000m en route to her new world record, a time which itself would be fourth best in the world this year. Defar's next plan competition will be at the International Indoor Meeting in Prague, CZE, to be held on February 26. Read more…
