Defar aims to better her own world record in Stuttgart

STUTTGART, GER - Meseret Defar, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist at 5000m, will attempt to better her own world record for 3000m indoors at the 2008 Sparkassen Cup Meeting in Stuttgart, to take place on February 7. Defar, the reigning world champion at 5000m, set the current world record for the distance at the same meeting in Stuttgart in 2007

Since setting the 3000m world indoor record two years ago, Defar has set three world bests for two miles, including the first ever sub-9 minute performance for the distance in the history of womens athletics. In addition to record times, Defar also won the 2007 IAAF World Championship gold at 5000m, the 2008 IAAF World Indoor title at 3000m, and the 5000m bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
