Tyson Gay breaks 100m American Record in quarterfinals
EUGENE, Oregon (June 28, 2008) - The journey from near-disaster to the history books took less than 2 1/2 hours.
In the first round of the 100 meters at the US Olympic Trials, triple World Champion Tyson Gay misjudged the finish line and began to ease up, only to realize his error and urgently hit the gas pedal to barely finish fourth in 10.14. "I was scared," he admitted later. "I almost started crying as soon as I crossed the line because I thought I didn't make it."
In the quarterfinal, Gay again eased up just before the finish, but this time it was with an American Record in his sights. His time of 9.77 seconds broke the previous mark of 9.79 set by Maurice Greene in 1999.
"It tells me I'm in pretty good shape," he said. "We've got two more rounds left. I thank God I was able to run a PR." Gay's previous personal best was 9.84 seconds.
