Background
 Shi Dongpeng gives China some surprising depth at the hurdles, with Liu Xiang the reigning Olympic gold medalist and World Champion and Shi a regular in international finals. "He's improving all the time," said Liu a few years ago, and Liu remains correct: since 2004, Shi's times have steadily come down, from 13.50 to the personal-best 13.19 he ran in placing fifth at the 2007 World Championships. His 13.22 in winning his heat was the fastest time of any athlete in the qualifying round.
