Background

In Amharic, Meskerem means September, or “the beginning,” and young Legesse’s career certainly got off to a thrilling start. In May of 2003, she stunned all of Ethiopia by taking the national title at both 800 meters and 1500 meters, and at the age of 16 went on to become the youngest Ethiopian competitor at the World Championships. Then at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 14, 2004, she pulled another surprise by defeating Nicole Teter and Hazel Clark at 800 meters indoors in a World Junior Record 2:01.03.

Legesse often trains in Tucson and Flagstaff, Arizona.
