Background

Markos GenetiAlthough often overshadowed by his countrymen, Markos Geneti has shown a distinct flair for the dramatic in his career. In February 2004, he stunned the track world when he nipped none other than Haile Gebrselassie at the tape in an indoor 2-mile race at the Norwich Union Grand Prix, and in 2005 he defeated Gebrselassie’s successor, Kenenisa Bekele, at the same distance.

In 2005, Markos once again rose to the occasion. A supposed 3000m “specialist,” he hit the World Championship “A” standard for 1500m in his first try, after not racing the distance for four years. It was also the last possible meet in which he could qualify.
