Background

While studying for his MBA at the University of Colorado, Jason Lunn cut way back on his racing schedule in 2005, giving rise to speculation he would retire after narrowly missing the US Olympic team at 1500 meters in both 2000 and 2004. To be honest, Jason thought he’d be retiring long before that, after a stellar career at Stanford University, and probably would have if he’d broken the 4-minute mile barrier there. But he ran 4:00.05, so close that he just had to keep going. Which he did, to the tune of three national championships.

After graduate school, Jason returned to action and finished second (3:56.77) at the 2006 Reebok Boston Indoor Games in the deepest indoor Mile in history – 11 men ran under 4 minutes, breaking the previous record of 8. Soon after, he won the Tyson Invitational in 3:55.87, and then placed second at the U.S. Indoor Championships to earn a spot on the World Indoor Championships team.
